Pension: With nearly 30 lakh workers in the central government, the pension topic has heated up once more. Employees who choose NPS have until June 30 to switch to UPS, according to the government. Thirty thousand of the federal government's thirty lakh workers oppose UPS adoption, and there is a movement among employee groups to reinstate the previous pension plan (OPS).
What are UPS and NPS
The National Pension Scheme (NPS), which was put into effect in 2004, currently covers the majority of central government employees. The government and employee contributions go into a fund that is invested in the stock market and other assets under this plan, which does not have a set pension. In contrast to the market-linked NPS, the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), a government-backed pension plan for central government employees, ensures a set pension payment for the workers.

Call for the reinstatement of the previous pension plan
The central government's decision to reinstate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) has caused a stir among employee organizations once more. This is because, although the government has offered National Pension Scheme (NPS) personnel the opportunity to enroll in the "Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)" until June 30, 2025, the anticipated interest in this option has not yet materialized.
Why did you decide not to join UPS
The most significant feature of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), according to Dr. Manjit Singh Patel, Chairman of the National Mission for Old Pension Scheme India, is that pension benefits are contingent on the number of years an employee survives after retirement.
An employee will receive just 30% of his average last income as a pension if he retires after 30 to 35 years of employment and withdraws contributions from UPS, while his spouse would receive only 18% in the event of his death. In this case, the retired individual must live for at least 16 years in order to get a pension equivalent to NPS.
